Save energy at home – Our tips for saving money and the environment!
How to save energy at home
Nowadays, it’s in all our best interests to use as little energy as possible in our day-to-day lives and save energy at home. According to data from NASA, June 2017 was the fourth hottest on record, and this hasn’t been a one-off, as all but one of the ten hottest Junes ever occurred between 2005-2017. Not only this, but in the UK some energy consumers could see their bills rise by as much as 60% as fixed deal rates end and standard tariffs increase!
Here are our tips on how to save energy at home!
With these statistics in mind, here are just some of the things you can do to lower your energy consumption around the home!
1 Use energy-saving light bulbs
Energy-saving bulbs last up to 12 times as long as standard bulbs, and you can save £78 over its lifetime!
2 Washing and drying your clothes
In summer, you can do the world a favour by ditching the dryer and just hanging clothes on a line outside! Also, when you can, wash at 40 or 30 degrees, and save a third on electricity usage!
3 Tea for two?
We all love a good cuppa, but if you’re not having the in-laws round and you’re only treating yourself to a tea, only boil enough water for one!
4 Nuke your food!
Cooking meals in a microwave oven uses from 30-80% less energy than cooking in a standard oven!
5 Free your fridges/freezers!
Defrosting your fridge and freezer helps them to run more efficiently, saving energy! Foodies out there, you’ll love this too… keeping your fridge fully stocked lessens the amount of time it has to run to stay cool, so pack in the pork, stuff in the sausages and load up on lard to help your fridge out!
6 General appliances
This may sound silly… but just remembering to turn off all your appliances such as TVs, DVD players etc can save the energy that they may consume while plugged in on standby!
